And here I thought it was going to be that some children were playing baseball long long ago, and one of them threw the ball into the graveyard but nobody had enough courage to go get it, and it was their only ball, and they couldn’t afford another one, so they never played baseball again. (Okay, what would you do with this one? My husband and I were driving on Scenic Highway the other day, a highway near our house, and in this little park, we thought we saw a rooster disappear into the overgrown brush. And two teenage boys were chasing it while what appeared to be their mother looked on as she stood at her car in the parking lot. We did catch one more glimpse, and it was a rooster. What’s the story?! I love making up stories for these kinds of scenarios.)

As for the kids losing their baseball in the cemetery and being too afraid to go get it, I can’t help but think of the movie The Sandlot. :)

Their mother had just finished showing them the movie Rocky (remember the scene where he has to chase roosters around their pen to increase his speed and instincts?). And the kids cackled, thinking it couldn’t be as hard to catch the roosters as Rocky made it out to be. So they were on a family roadtrip and saw a rooster on the side of the road.

“Here’s your chance, kids,” Mom says!

Yes, of course, the Sand Lot! And, boy, that Rocky reference -- I did not remember that. But I like it. My story goes like this -- this family decided to get chickens but then the dad said no to the rooster waking them up every morning and commanded the mom and boys to "get rid of it." So the mom and boys decided to drop it off at a public park, hoping someone would pick it up. But then it tried to fly into Scenic Highway, so they were actually trying to corral it back away from the road. Maybe?

Aww. That makes my heart hurt for the kids. They were just trying to make sure the rooster was safe in the park and it did a roostery thing. It fluttered away. I hope the kids were successful in corralling the rooster and bringing him back to safety. And I hope he found a good home.
